The review of the research accomplishments related to the development of financial markets in the last two decades shows that most of the topics studied concerned the analysis of the principles of operation and processes occurring in the broadly understood sector of financial services. The authors of this study focus on the search for the source of the processes occurring, prediction of the
development and variability of the observed trends as well as looking for the causes of the identified turning points and crisis situations. In the research work conducted so far, the topic of the development of scientific thought and the related process of educating employees for the needs of financial institutions have been completely neglected. For many years, the management of banks, insurance companies, investment funds and other financial institutions reported the problem of the need to systematise the principles of education concerning the preparation of future specialists for work in these institutions. Undoubtedly, a significant, although so far unexplored, contribution to the development and education of specialists in banking, insurance and capital markets was made by the SGH Warsaw School of Economics together with its pre-war and post-war predecessors, whose operation dates back almost 120 years. In order to develop coherent and logical educational programmes for the future staff, it is justified to thoroughly examine the achievements in this area to date, all the more so as the achievements in the performance of science and practice
in the interwar period had a huge impact on the development of banking and insurance in Poland during the political transformation. The textbooks written at that time, e.g. by Professor Jan Łazowski, a lecturer at the Warsaw School of Economics in the 1930s, were the source of education for the generation of financial professionals at the turn of the 21st century. Therefore, in order to make sure that the research on the development of knowledge of financial institutions and markets is sufficiently comprehensive and complete, it seems justified to explore the topic of educational programmes and the history of people involved in financial education, especially insurance. The archival information shows that on 15 December 1916, the first Field of Study of Insurance was established at the Higher School of Commerce. For these reasons, we have initiated research on the analysis of the history of this field of study and its students in an attempt to determine the contribution of these people to the development of the insurance sector as well as the insurance science in Poland. The study is based on the analysis of the preserved archives of the SGH Warsaw School of Economics as well as personal documents of the founders of this field of study and its lecturers.
